Following the announcement of his ban, Sandro Tonali will be sidelined for the entirety of Newcastle United’s 2023–24 campaign.
Eddie Howe declined to comment when questioned earlier this week about if Newcastle United will try to sign a Sandro Tonali successor during the January transfer window.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and the Italian Prosecutor’s Office conducted an investigation into illicit betting activities, and the results were revealed by the FIGC on Thursday. Tonali was given a 10-month penalty.
The 23-year-old can continue to train with the Magpies normally even though he won’t be playing again until August of next year, a few weeks into the 2024–25 season.
Newcastle lacks a physical presence in the middle of the field due to Tonali’s immediate absence, but Howe wouldn’t even consider discussing possible substitutes when questioned before the team’s 1-0 Champions League loss to Borussia Dortmund.
“To be honest, it’s a bit too early for that,” stated the Magpies’ manager. I am aware that there are a lot of rumors floating about, but we won’t know for sure until January and everything it will include. In the meanwhile, we may plan a strategy for when that happens, but not just yet.
Since joining Newcastle from AC Milan in a deal costing £52 million plus add-ons in the summer, Tonali has made 12 appearances.
Tonali’s teammate Sean Longstaff was questioned during the same press conference as Howe on Tuesday, and he stated that he thought United had enough depth in the squad to manage without him, pointing to Joe Willock’s comeback.
“I’m sure we can handle it,” Longstaff remarked. Although the result is yet unknown, Joelinton is back to full health, Joe Willock is expected to return from injury, and Elliot Anderson has shown tremendous leadership. Then there’s Lewis Miley, the little superstar that I adore, making an appearance.
“The main one is Willock’s return. I could go on and on about how excellent he is; even from watching him this week in training, it doesn’t appear like he has lost a beat. All I can say is that I’m thrilled he’s back.
We are aware of his importance since the team performs at its peak when he is there. When it comes to his movement off the ball and his level of confidence, nobody is able to match him. I’m hoping he can demonstrate his skills here on stage as well.
