The English FA can now approach the teenager as he considers his future move, and England manager Gareth Southgate has refused to rule out an 11th-hour swoop for the midfielder. When asked if he could be a target, Southgate replied, “I’m not sure.” We liked him and continue to like him.

“We believe Anderson is a very talented player.” He was obviously brought into their squad earlier in the week, and I’m not sure what his current role is. I noticed he’d pulled out.

“Let’s see if that’s something John McDermott and others in our organisation will notice.”

Clarke was asked last week, following his departure from the squad, if he had sought any assurances from the 20-year-old. “No,” he responded. He simply returned home.

“I don’t have any control over it.” There isn’t much I can do about it.

“Obviously [it was upsetting not to be able to work with Elliot], which is why we brought him into the squad. It’s disappointing to lose Elliot and Liam [Kelly] on the same day, but that’s part of international sport; you just have to live with it.
