Neco Williams has urged fans and media outlets not to expect Brennan Johnson to repeat Gareth Bale or Harry Kane’s success at Tottenham, claiming that the 22-year-old will do things his own way.

The inevitable comparisons to Bale have already been drawn, considering that Johnson is another pacy Welsh attacker seen as the Dragons’ successor to the Tottenham icon.

The 22-year-old is also under pressure to live up to the label of Harry Kane’s replacement, as Spurs did not sign an out-and-out number nine this summer.

Williams, his international teammate, has now argued that those comparisons aren’t helpful for the new Tottenham player, acknowledging that the dynamic attacker now confronts the daunting task of proving himself at a top-six club.

When challenged about the similarities to Bale and Kane, the Forest midfielder told the Nottingham Post: “A lot of fans will say that, but Brennan is not Gareth Bale or Harry Kane.

“He’s his own player, with his own flair. He wouldn’t want to be compared to them or be seen as their stand-ins.

“He has the potential to excel at the highest levels.” However, he is only 22 years old and still extremely young. He’s proven it in the Premier League, and now he has to prove it at a top-six team and do it again in the Premier League.”

Brennan Johnson is upbeat about his Spurs debut.
Williams also stated that the move to Tottenham has increased Johnson’s confidence in his own abilities, and added that there was a celebration among the Welsh contingent after the deal was finalised.

“He’s got a move for big money, and you can see that his confidence has taken him to the next level,” the full-back continued. Hopefully, he can carry it into the Wales camp and help us win some games.

“After the move was completed, we celebrated with a little drink and some nice food.” It was a quick get-together and an opportunity to congratulate Brennan on his new job. To be fair, he also received the bill.

“Everyone was clamouring for him.” It was a last-minute decision, but we are all thrilled for him. I’m really not looking forward to him returning to the City Ground!”

Spurs Online Opinion

Given that Johnson, 22, is not a true number nine, I don’t think any Spurs fan expects him to fill Kane’s shoes. However, considering the high price tag, the Wales international will be under greater pressure than he has been used to at Forest.
