According to one observer, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has managed to help turn around the career of World Cup winning hero Cristian Romero, with the error-prone defender turning over a new leaf and being coaxed into abandoning plans to leave.

Since his original season-long loan from Atalanta in summer 2021, the Argentine star has cut a contentious figure. The 25-year-old has been something of an enigma during his time in north London, with that agreement later becoming permanent. Tottenham would not have been surprised if he cashed in on him this summer, given he is a world-beater at times and an error-strewn reckless mess at others.

However, the appointment of Postecoglou as manager has resulted in a turnaround in fortunes. So far, the center-half has been a picture of consistency and is lot more at ease functioning in Tottenham’s flat back four than in the five utilised by predecessor Antonio Conte.

Indeed, the Spurs have lost a number of defensive alternatives during the summer. Eric Dier appears to be on the way out, having been phased out by Postecoglou and advised by Daniel Levy that he can depart in January.

Furthermore, with Davinson Sanchez departing for Galatasaray, Romero is now the senior statesman of a newly assembled Spurs defence team.

Romero is embracing his new responsibilities at Spurs, working alongside summer signing Micky van de Ven and other recent newcomers Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro as full-backs.

So much so that journalist and YouTuber Alasdair Gold now claims Romero’s plans to leave Tottenham Hotspur Stadium have been formally scrapped.
