Millwall great pens heartbreaking Sheffield Wednesday farewell as he becomes a free agent.
The Sheffield Wednesday striker is looking for a new club this summer after being released.Lee Gregory, a Millwall legend, has written an impassioned farewell to Sheffield Wednesday as he prepares to leave as a free agent this summer. The 35-year-old became a marginal player in Yorkshire after falling out of favor with Danny Rohl this season.
Gregory, who scored 76 goals in 238 Lions appearances between 2014 and 2019, departs The Den as the club’s eighth all-time leading scorer. He joined Stoke City in 2019 before going to Sheffield Wednesday in 2021.
Last season, the striker bagged 10 goals in League One as he helped the Owls to the Championship, but made just 13 appearances in the second division this term. Gregory didn’t start a Championship match after October as Rohl ushered in a new era at Hillsborough.
Taking to social media, Gregory wrote: “I have not been on this for some time now but I just wanted to say personally from the bottom of my heart – thank you to everyone at SWFC.
“This past year has not been what I wanted, and how I wanted my career here to finish. I have been gutted about it and wish it was different. As everyone who knows me knows, all I wanted to do was play. I am so happy the team stayed up because you all deserve it.
“I have had some of the best memories a footballer can get at this club with the promotion last year, and that will stay with me forever. The game at home against Peterborough was the best atmosphere I have ever seen and been involved in. I will be seeing you soon at Hillsborough as my son who’s now a massive fan wants to watch all the games. Thank you.”
Where Gregory moves next remains to be seen but The Star reports that three unnamed EFL clubs are interested in securing the proven goalscorer’s services on a free transfer this summer, despite his lack of playing time in 2024.
Speaking about the former Millwall man late last year, Rohl had said: “The door is still open and he is a player for us. I support him. But for sure there is always a battle to be in the squad. He is a good human, I like him, he is honest and he works hard in training. Let’s see what we have to do on Saturday, we spoke about fresh legs coming into the squad again.
“I spoke in the dressing room that we need everybody in the group. Even if today he is not in the squad it doesn’t mean he is out. He will still have a chance, but Bailey played fantastic and this is a good signal for us.”
