Wrexham AFC reportedly have new minority owners as a result of a deal that has seen Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney acquire a stake in another football club after their success with the Welsh side.
Following the announcement in late 2020 that the actors would be purchasing the North Wales club for approximately £2 million, Wrexham went on to win the National League and were promoted to League One the following season.
The two have greatly improved the club. Through osmosis and their global reach, they have greatly enhanced the team’s popularity and helped the club generate record-breaking money.
Their revenue of £10.5 million in the 2022–2023 season beat the record set by the National League and exceeded that of all League Two clubs and the majority of League One teams. The same claims hold true for their earnings and losses from that particular season.
Regardless of how they approached it or how you feel about it, the club has clearly been successful, and the two have seized another chance to attempt to support the development of a football team.
Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney invest in Club Necaxa
Variety reports that the owners of Wrexham have invested in Club Necaxa, a Mexican team that competes in the Liga MX, the most watched league in the United States.
According to reports, the couple was persuaded to join the club’s mission by fellow actor Eva Longoria, who was already on board at the Mexican side. Longoria, along with fellow investors Al Tylis and Sam Porter, will collaborate with Reynolds and McElhenney.
Even if it’s a minority interest, Variety believes that R.R. McReynolds currently owns a sizable portion of the team.
According to Sportico, Variety’s sister sports daily, Longoria, Tylis, and Porter—who have had shares in Necaxa since 2021—now own 5% of the Welsh team as part of the agreement to bring the two on board.
The goal is to increase the club’s global recognition as the demand for the sport continues to rise, much as it did with Wrexham.
The Welsh team’s documentary series ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ has been a big success for the team and took home five Emmy Awards at the 2023 Television Awards.
Rumors about whether a program such to this could be developed around the Mexican side have been generated by news of the investment in Necaxa, however Variety has stated that discussions of this are: “premature.”
Club Necaxa presents a different challenge for Reynolds and McElhenney
Their purported new club, in contrast to their Welsh squad, has long been a mainstay in their respective premier tier. They have won the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup twice (1975 and 1999), as well as thrice in the Primera División throughout the 1990s.
Rather than beginning at the bottom and working their way up, they will be in direct competition with the biggest teams in the country, such as Club America, Chivas, and others.
Necaxa, which placed ninth in the Liga MX Clausura, will take on Queretaro in their play-in game on Friday. The victor of that game will move on to the next round of the competition.
Reynolds and McElhenney won’t be able to jump to the top and show off their enormous bankrolls right once. It appears that Necaxa will be more of a project for them.
They won’t make the final decisions because they just own a little portion of the company. Even yet, unlike the circumstances around Wrexham, they wouldn’t be able to outmuscle everyone in the vicinity. Necaxa will need a distinct strategy.
