rews at the North Carolina coast are preparing roads ahead of snowfall Tuesday night — with up to 6 inches of snow along the Outer Banks possible.
On Tuesday, forecasters upgraded the Outer Banks to a winter storm warning and said 8 inches of snow is now predicted in Outer Banks areas.
A rare sight at the Outer Banks has NCDOT trucks applying a brine solution along N.C. 12 — the main road through the islands.
“We’ll be spreading it on bridges and major roadways throughout the area today and tomorrow,” the N.C. 12 NCDOT social media account said Monday.
A winter storm watch was issued Monday for the Outer Banks with “heavy snow possible” Tuesday night, the National Weather Service in Morehead City wrote.
The winter storm watch is from 5 p.m. Tuesday to 7 a.m. Wednesday.
“Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations between 2 and 5 inches possible. Locally higher amounts possible,” the watch said.
As of Sunday, forecasters said snow amounts were trending down, but they now say a half foot of snow is possible at the Outer Banks.
The winter storm watch is for Currituck, Dare, Hyde, Pamlico, Carteret and Onslow counties.
“Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Plan on slippery road conditions,” forecasters in Wilmington said.
Also, a winter storm watch was issued Monday afternoon for the southern North Carolina coast from late Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.
The weather service warned of up to 2 inches of snow in Pender, Brunswick, and New Hanover counties.
