As of January ,Penn State University has issued a termination notice to head football coach James Franklin. While there has been fan discontent following certain losses, such as the defeat to Ohio State in November 2024, where chants of “Fire Franklin” were heard the university has not announced any decision to dismiss him.
James Franklin has been at the helm of the Nittany Lions since 2014, achieving a record of 95-40 through Week 10 of the 2024 season. His tenure includes a Big Ten Championship in 2016 and multiple bowl appearances. Despite these accomplishments, his record against top-tier opponents, particularly Ohio State and Michigan, has been a point of contention among fans and analysts.
In the event of a coaching change, several potential candidates could be considered to replace Franklin:
- Matt Campbell: Currently the head coach at Iowa State, Campbell has garnered attention for his success with the Cyclones, including multiple winning seasons and bowl appearances. His ability to develop talent and compete in the Big 12 could make him an attractive candidate.
- Jamey Chadwell: Serving as the head coach at Liberty, Chadwell has led the Flames to impressive records, including a 13-0 regular season. His innovative offensive strategies and success at smaller programs might appeal to a Power Five school like Penn State
- Andy Kotelnicki: As the offensive coordinator at Penn State, Kotelnicki has experience within the program and has been noted for his offensive acumen. While he lacks head coaching experience, his familiarity with the team could be seen as a benefit.
- Alex Golesh: The head coach at South Florida, Golesh has demonstrated the ability to turn around programs, improving South Florida’s record significantly in his first season. His diverse coaching background includes experience at various programs, which could be advantageous.
- Barry Odom: Currently leading UNLV, Odom has elevated the program to new heights with an 18-7 record over two seasons. His previous experience as a head coach at Missouri and defensive coordinator at Arkansas adds to his credentials
It’s important to note that these names are speculative, and any official search for a new head coach would involve a thorough and confidential process by the university’s athletic department. As of now, James Franklin remains the head coach of Penn State football.
