Conor McGregor, the renowned mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, was recently found liable in a civil court case in Dublin for the alleged sexual assault of Nikita Hand in December 2018. The jury ruled in favor of Hand, ordering McGregor to pay nearly €250,000 (approximately $260,000) in damages. The case involved allegations that McGregor assaulted Hand in a hotel room following a night of drinking and drug use. Hand claimed she was left with significant injuries and trauma, including post-traumatic stress disorder.
Hand testified that McGregor had violently assaulted her after ignoring her protests, using physical force to restrain her. She also alleged that he mocked her afterward by referencing his own UFC losses. Surveillance footage and other evidence were presented during the trial, though McGregor’s defense argued the interaction was consensual. He has announced plans to appeal the verdict, maintaining his innocence.
The trial has garnered significant media attention, with Hand publicly encouraging other survivors of sexual violence to speak up. She expressed gratitude for the support she received throughout the legal process, emphasizing the importance of seeking justice despite challenges.
The verdict does not involve criminal charges, as prosecutors had previously declined to pursue the case, citing insufficient evidence for a conviction. McGregor’s legal troubles are part of a broader history of controversies, including other allegations of assault and misconduct.
