BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show’s Scott Mills’ salary revealed as he replaces Zoe Ball
Scott Mills’ salary for the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show has been revealed, and the DJ is set to earn much less than his predecessor, Zoe Ball, who is quitting the role
Scott Mills, the new host of the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show, will reportedly earn less than half of what his predecessor Zoe Ball did for the same role. Zoe, 53, announced her departure from the show on Tuesday morning, having joined in January 2019, and Scott, 51, was revealed as her replacement shortly afterwards.
Zoe received a substantial salary for her hosting duties, earning an impressive £950,000 per year. In contrast, Scott will be paid £450,000 to take over her position, according to The Sun.
Although this six-figure sum represents a slight pay increase for the fellow Radio 2 presenter, it is significantly less than Zoe’s near-million pound salary. An insider told The Sun that the BBC is keen to make savings, with Director General Tim Davie indicating that the era of seven-figure salaries for its top talent is coming to an end, reports the Mirror.
However, there are concerns that stars may leave for streaming services or ITV due to public scrutiny over their salaries. Despite the BBC’s cost-cutting move in hiring Scott for the role, the source stressed that he harbours no resentment about not being offered Zoe’s hefty salary.
An insider revealed, “Scott, though, was genuinely thrilled to get the gig. He didn’t even ask about a pay rise,” while Scott himself expressed his sentiment by saying, “I don’t do it for the money but for the love… as I have done since I was 16.”
Both Zoe and Scott are evidently delighted with his new role. Following the announcement that he would take over, they shared a warm moment outside the BBC studios in London.
“Zoe and I have been such good friends now for over 25 years and have spent much of that time as part of the same radio family here at Radio 2 and also on Radio 1,” Scott said enthusiastically. He continued, sharing his excitement, “She’s done an incredible job on this show over the past six years, and I am beyond excited to be handed the baton. It feels ever since recording my first shows as a kid for an audience of one, my mum, all roads since have led to this amazing opportunity.”
Zoe Ball also showed great affection for Scott Mills as she spoke to her listeners, stating, “Scott and I go way back to our Radio 1 days, when he was doing early mornings before me. He’s been a close friend for years, and I’m beyond thrilled it’s him taking over the Breakfast Show.”
She praised him further: “Breakfast has always been his dream, and what a year he’s had – from racing around the world to his beautiful wedding to Sam. He’s not only a blooming brilliant producer but one of the best in radio. I can’t wait to tune in on the school run.”
