Rennae Stubbs criticizes Coco Gauff’s coach as they share a panel in a very awkward ESPN moment.
Speaking candidly about Coco Gauff’s fourth-round exit at the U.S. Open on Sunday, Rennae Stubbs vented her frustrations to the coach of the American sensation who was seated on the same panel.
Stubbs, a former world doubles No. 1 who coached Serena Williams during the 2022 U.S. Open, praised Gauff’s confidence and technique during their three-set loss to Emma Navarro on ESPN’s panel. However, she also acknowledged that it was awkward to do so with Gauff’s coach, Brad Gilbert, sharing the panel.
“Where is Coco’s self-assurance?” Stubbs stated, as cited by Daily Mail. “That’s the sign; there isn’t a second serve. That presents a challenge.
“Under pressure, poor technique falters, and she has a technique that is difficult for me to describe because Brad is seated here,” Nevertheless, she has a slightly strange grip and her elbow is positioned rather low.
Gilbert, a former professional tennis player who has trained players like Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick, has come under heavy fire following Gauff’s 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 loss to fellow countryman Navarro.
“I find it extremely uncomfortable to watch Brad Gilbert spinning the Gauff loss on air while she’s in the press conference room,” X user Stephanie Myles commented.
When Gilbert joined Gauff’s team a year ago during her amazing summer run, things were very different.
Gauff, the defending U.S. Open champ, fell to Emma Navarro on Sept. 1, 2024. USA TODAY Sports via Reuters Con Gauff, who had 60 unforced errors Sunday, looked to her box in Flushing and said, “Tell me something!” It’s similar circumstances to what unfolded in Wimbledon earlier this summer when Gauff also lost to Navarro, 6-4, 6-3, in the Round of 16. Gauff also pleaded with her coaching box for advice during that match.
“I don’t think we were all in sync,” Gauff said after the Wimbledon loss, according to SI.com. “It’s no one’s blame except myself. I mean, I’m the player out there. I have to make decisions for myself on the court.” The Florida native spoke about mechanics after Monday’s defeat ender her title defense. “I go down on my left side a lot on my serve, and it’s something I’m aware of, but it’s tough in the moment to, I guess, try not to do it,” she said, according to the Associated Press.
