With her aggressive playing style, Paolini cruised past the 2020 US Open quarterfinalist in the third round by 6-3, 6-4. And Paolini’s excitement over reaching the US Open third round was only surpassed by her unexpected meeting with Anna Wintour.

“I think she has jet lag because when I played at night, she sent me a message after the match. They’re following even in the night. I don’t know how they do it. My mom became famous at Wimbledon. She’s a meme I think.”
The world No. 5 tennis player was casually dressed in a white outfit, beige hoodie, and sneakers, a stark contrast to Wintour’s elegant floral dress, with the omnipresent sunglasses and bob hairstyle. On meeting her, Paolini quickly decided to click a photo with the 74-year-old British-American media executive and later posted it on Instagram with, “Met Anna Wintour today — I’ve never felt so underdressed in my life!😅,” as a relatable caption by poking fun at herself.A major Roger Federer fan, Wintour is often found in the front-row seats of tennis tournaments. With the most recent being the 2024 Olympics.
Not many would know that Wintour, who has been serving as the Vouge’s EIC since 1988, shares a decade-long friendship with Federer. “She invited me to dinner parties that she hosts always for all her friends and their partners and so forth. I realized she’s a massive tennis fan. Oh my God, she loves my game,” Federer once said in an exclusive interview with Us Weekly.
However, for Paolini, it was a day for celebration as she became 1st Italian woman in the Open Era to reach R4 of all 4 Slams in a season. When asked where her consistency comes from, she said, “This year, I started, well, I have to say and then I started to believe more in myself. I started to believe that I could play well, also in the Slams, because before this year, I never passed two rounds, so it changed a little bit, I guess.”
The French Open finalist’s high spirits were palpable as her funny remarks continued to please fans when she paid a special tribute to her mother!
The Italian Open doubles winner humorously added, “I just want to say to her and also to my father.. because if not, he’s a bit jealous.. that I love them. I love my brother. I love my family. One kiss for them.”
