Little Steven Van Zandt Reacts to Bruce Springsteen’s Billionaire Status: ‘A Dream Come True for The Boss

In a recent interview with U.K. newspaper The Independent, E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt, affectionately known as Little Steven, humorously addressed the news that Bruce Springsteen has achieved billionaire status. Forbes reported last month that Springsteen’s net worth now stands at approximately $1.1 billion. Van Zandt’s reaction was light-hearted, saying, “It’s great for me because I’m gonna definitely borrow some money, I tell you that. I’m joking, of course,” and added with a chuckle, “My bookie’s gonna love him. I’m joking again!”

Despite the amusing remarks, Van Zandt expressed some skepticism about the accuracy of Forbes’ figures. Nevertheless, he emphasized that Springsteen’s wealth does not influence his dedication to music. “When you have enough money to live, that’s the point where it matters. Do you continue to work? Or do you retire on a yacht and drink mojitos off the coast of Portugal?” Van Zandt said. “The fact is: this is what we do. And so the money has absolutely no factor. It hasn’t affected [Springsteen] for many, many years. Ever since, really, [his 1984 album] Born in the U.S.A.”

Van Zandt reflected on his deep, enduring friendship with Springsteen, which began in their teenage years when they played in rival bands on the New Jersey shore. Their bond was strengthened by a shared work ethic and a compassionate, liberal philosophy. “We both had a really strong work ethic, and a compassionate, independent, liberal philosophy in terms of feeling like we’re on the planet to help a little bit,” he said.

Springsteen and the E Street Band recently concluded a European leg of their world tour and are gearing up for the U.S. leg, starting August 15 in Pittsburgh. The tour will continue through September and include a Canadian run from late October to November. For details on their tour schedule, visit BruceSpringsteen.net.
