Warrington Wolves have signed centre Rodrick Tai to a contract extension that will keep him at the club until the end of the 2025 season.
Tai has become a pivotal player for Sam Burgess with the Papua New Guinean international getting stronger as the season progresses, culminating with a Man of the Match performance against St Helens last week.
The 25-year-old centre put in a mammoth performance both offensively and defensively as Warrington Wolves overcame a man disadvantage to beat Saints and put pressure on Super League leaders Wigan Warriors.
He also earned Player of the Month accolades in April showcasing his importance to the squad throughout the season and for that he has been rewarded with a 12-month contract extension.
Tai had signed for Warrington Wolves last year but after impressing in the Pacific Bowl for PNG he was subject to NRL attention at the start of this season, making Warrington’s ability to keep hold of him all the more impressive.
Less than three weeks ago, Love Rugby League, reported that Warrington Wolves had a fight on their hands to keep hold of Tai as they suggested NRL interest but Sam Burgess has been able to keep his man for a further year.
Warrington Wolves confirmed the news of Tai’s one-year extension with a statement via their social media channels and website.
It read: “Warrington Wolves can confirm that Rodrick Tai has signed a 12-month contract extension with the club for the 2025 season.
The Papua New Guinea international has impressed in his debut season in Super League, scoring six tries in his 13 appearances for the Wolves to date.”
On the deal, Tai said: “I’m really happy that I’m here to stay and go again for another year. I’ve learnt a lot this season from the boys and the coaching staff.
“It was challenging at first with the weather and without my family but I’m settled in the UK now. Everyone has been kind and good to me and I’m happy to be a part of the family here.
“I’ve played more than I expected to this year and have learnt a lot. I want to continue to improve now and give everything for the club.”
Warrington Wolves Head Coach Sam Burgess added: “Rod’s been a fantastic addition for us this season and a consistent performer.
“He never shies away from the physical side of the game and sets a great example with his work ethic. He’s building each week and I’m excited to see him continue to develop and contribute for the team.”
