Fabrizio Romano says Brentford will complete signing of ‘special’ Champions League winner today
Brentford are now set to sign a Premier League winner who has been praised relentlessly by Jurgen Klopp. The Bees face a difficult summer as they look to remain solid Premier League outfit while losing manager Thomas Frank, key man Christian Norgaard and perhaps likely key attackers Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo.
Keith Andrews has a tough task ahead of him next season, but the club has shown it can recruit new players very effectively, and the same kind of standard will be required when it comes to new signings this summer.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Brentford have moved to snap up veteran midfielder Jordan Henderson after his spell with Ajax. The England midfielder is a free agent at 35 and will add real leadership.
Romano posted on X: “Brentford are set to sign Jordan Henderson with deal being completed today for former Ajax midfielder. Hendo, available as free agent after he left Ajax and now set for Premier League return. Formal steps to follow.”
Henderson won titles aplenty at Liverpool, including a Premier League title, two Champions Leagues and many others. He was the club captain during a hugely successful spell for the Reds, and Jurgen Klopp said of his impact: “When I arrived here Hendo was injured, he didn’t know me really well, it’s the same situation, he knew me from the television. He had no idea how I am, who I am, stuff like this and he was injured. That’s not a good situation for a player when a new manager is coming in and you are injured.’
“So, I remember when he asked if he could come with us to the game, I’ve forgotten which game it was, an away game, even when he cannot play but wanting to be in the dressing room. I thought, ‘yeah you can but do you not have anything more serious to do like rehab or whatever?’ It took a while until I understood that he wanted to prove a point, he never had to but that’s like a little bit of insecurity probably, that’s obviously different (now) with his maturity and he obviously grew up since we worked together.’ Nothing that we have achieved in the past few years would have happened without him, that’s easy to say.”
He added later when Henderson announced his departure: “In the future when people are looking back then they will realise Jordan Henderson was the skipper of [our] most successful squad until then – I hope we can create another one – and the skipper of the first Premier League title winners and all these kind of things. That’s a special career. He should be, and will be in the future, proud of it.
“I know it was a really, really tough decision for Hendo and I was around or with him all the way. It’s sad, absolutely strange, because he is the only captain I had here at Liverpool, but I think it is exciting for him as well. We will miss him, without a shadow of a doubt, that’s clear – as a man and as a player.”
