Netflix Set to Release Documentary on Engelbert Humperdinck. Titled “Engelbert: The Last of the Crooners”, the film promises an intimate, heartfelt journey through the triumphs and challenges of an artist who defied the odds to become an international icon

Netflix is set to unveil a captivating new documentary chronicling the life and career of legendary British singer Engelbert Humperdinck — a man whose velvet voice, romantic ballads, and timeless charisma made him one of the most beloved entertainers in music history. Titled “Engelbert: The Last of the Crooners”, the film promises an intimate, heartfelt journey through the triumphs and challenges of an artist who defied the odds to become an international icon.

Engelbert Humperdinck, born Arnold George Dorsey in Madras, British India, rose to fame in the 1960s with his breakout hit “Release Me,” a song that famously kept The Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields Forever” from reaching No. 1 in the UK charts. With his suave persona, signature sideburns, and powerful baritone, he quickly became a global sensation. Over the decades, he earned the nickname “The King of Romance” and sold more than 140 million records worldwide.

Now, for the first time, fans will get an unfiltered look behind the curtain — into the life of the man behind the legend. The Netflix documentary will trace Humperdinck’s roots, from his early struggles with tuberculosis and career setbacks to his meteoric rise and enduring legacy in a constantly evolving music industry.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jonathan Parkes, “Engelbert: The Last of the Crooners” blends rare archival footage, concert clips, behind-the-scenes moments, and newly recorded interviews with the singer himself, now in his late 80s. The film features commentary from friends, fellow musicians, and industry insiders, including appearances by Tom Jones, Neil Sedaka, and Lionel Richie — each offering insights into Engelbert’s influence and unique place in pop culture history.

“This is a story about resilience, elegance, and enduring love,” Parkes said in a statement. “Engelbert’s journey is one of the most inspiring in music history, and it was time to give it the depth and care it truly deserves.”

The documentary does not shy away from the more challenging aspects of his life — including the fierce rivalry with Tom Jones during the 60s and 70s, the shifting tides of musical taste that at times threatened to sideline crooners like him, and the recent passing of his beloved wife Patricia after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Engelbert speaks candidly about the heartbreak, the loneliness of fame, and how music helped him cope.

“I’ve always believed in the power of a song,” Humperdinck says in the film. “One song can say what you can’t put into words. And I’ve been lucky to sing a few that touched hearts. This documentary is for everyone who gave me a chance to sing to theirs.”

The documentary also celebrates Engelbert’s surprising appeal across generations. From Vegas showrooms to appearances on The Tonight Show, MTV Cribs, and even a stint representing the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2012, Humperdinck’s relevance endured. Younger artists, including Michael Bublé and Harry Styles, are shown expressing admiration for his vocal talent, style, and ability to connect with audiences.

Netflix, known for its compelling music documentaries on artists like Taylor Swift, Johnny Cash, and Tina Turner, sees this film as a tribute to a nearly forgotten but deeply influential era. “Engelbert Humperdinck represents an age of showmanship, grace, and heart. His music transcended borders and generations,” said a Netflix executive. “This film is not just about a singer — it’s about an era that he helped define.”
