Brentford manager Thomas Frank has provided a candid perspective on the club’s approach to the upcoming summer transfer window, particularly concerning star forward Bryan Mbeumo. In a recent interview, Frank acknowledged the possibility of Mbeumo’s departure, emphasizing that any potential transfer would necessitate a substantial offer.
“If the right price—and that’s going to be expensive—is coming, then I’m sure the club will be open to it,” Frank stated. “But I’m very happy he is here, and I’m convinced that Bryan will still be happy playing football here.”
Mbeumo, 25, has been instrumental for Brentford this season, registering 18 goals and six assists in the Premier League. His contributions, alongside Yoane Wissa’s 16 goals, account for 60% of the team’s league goals. Both players are entering the final year of their contracts, prompting speculation about their futures.
Despite the potential departures, Frank remains confident in Brentford’s ability to adapt. He cited the club’s history of successfully replacing key strikers like Neal Maupay, Ollie Watkins, and Ivan Toney. “Every season we replace the goals with other players, so I am confident that we can do it again,” he asserted.
Brentford’s reputation as a selling club is something Frank embraces, viewing it as an opportunity for renewal. “A good squad needs new energy once in a while,” he explained. “So it’s not that I just want Wissa and Bryan to go or want to … ; when you get new players in … .”
Interest in Mbeumo has been mounting, with top clubs like Liverpool, Arsenal, and Newcastle reportedly monitoring his situation. Liverpool, in particular, sees Mbeumo as a potential successor to Mohamed Salah, given his versatility and impressive statistics. Mbeumo’s efficiency in front of goal and his ability to create opportunities have drawn comparisons to Salah’s playing style.
As the summer transfer window approaches, Brentford faces the challenge of balancing potential lucrative deals with maintaining team performance. Frank’s pragmatic approach suggests that while the club is open to significant offers, they are also prepared to rebuild and continue their competitive presence in the Premier League.
The coming months will be crucial in determining the futures of Mbeumo and Wissa, as well as Brentford’s strategy in navigating the ever-evolving football transfer landscape.
