BBC Radio 2’s Scott Mills addresses marriage concerns and early starts ahead of new show

Scott Mills is set to take over the Radio 2 Breakfast Show after Zoe Ball stepped down, and the DJ has addressed concerns the new role could take a toll on his marriage

Scott Mills has opened up about the challenges he will face in his demanding new role on Radio 2 as a married man.

Zoe Ball announced in November that she would be leaving the Radio 2 Breakfast Show, presenting her last episode just before Christmas

It was subsequently disclosed that Scott would be filling the vacancy, with his first show scheduled for Monday, January 27. Meanwhile Trevor Nelson will be stepping into Scott’s previous afternoon slot.

However, hosting a morning radio show comes with its own unique hurdles, including waking up at 4am on weekdays – a potential issue for a married couple.

Nevertheless, Scott, who is wed to audio producer Sam Vaughan, feels he’s at the “exact point” in his life to embrace this challenge.

When asked if the strict early schedule will take a toll on his relationship, Scott told Radio Times Magazine: “I’m at the exact point in my life where I should be doing a breakfast show.

“It definitely wasn’t 15 years ago because I really enjoyed going out and those two don’t necessarily go together. But I have a very lovely life now, I’m very settled.

“If I was in my 20s, I’d have mad FOMO – ‘Oh, my God, I’m missing out on the latest album launch’ – but I don’t feel that now.”

Just last week, Scott confessed to the Mirror that he broke down in tears in his dressing gown upon hearing he’d secured the role, admitting he “fully sobbed”.

He continued to express that it’s a “massive gig” that “isn’t lost” on him, reflecting that he had now been a stalwart of BBC Radio for an impressive 25 years.

Reflecting on his career, Scott shared: “Once I’d kind of calmed down from the sobbing, I was kind of having a real reflective moment of like, ‘Well, I remember being a bit sad that I never got The Radio 1 Breakfast Show,’ but then if I had at the time, would I be where I am now? “

Last year, Zoe announced her departure after “six incredible years”, stepping back from the “very early mornings” to “focus on family”.

This follows Scott and Sam’s victory in Celebrity Race Across The World in 2024, where they fended off competition from Ted Lasso’s Kola Bokinni and relative Mary Ellen Moriarty to triumph at the Osorno Volcano base camp in Frutillar, Chile.

Upon opening the book at the end, Scott confessed he was “speechless” and there’s “no other feeling like” discovering that the book had no other names.
