Chesterfield Football Club have officially confirmed the signing of former Everton midfielder Luke Butterfield on a two-year contract following a successful trial period during pre-season. The 21-year-old becomes the club’s eighth signing of the summer transfer window, as manager Paul Cook continues to reshape his squad ahead of the 2025/26 League Two campaign.

Butterfield, who spent over a decade within the Everton academy system, arrives at the SMH Group Stadium with a reputation as a composed and technically gifted central midfielder. He featured prominently in Chesterfield’s pre-season friendlies against the likes of Matlock Town, Burton Albion, Nottingham Forest, and Europa Point, impressing the coaching staff with his vision, work rate, and tactical intelligence.

“It’s a pleasure to finally get the deal sorted,” Butterfield said in his first interview as a Chesterfield player. “I’m excited for the season ahead. I came in [on trial] and my main goal was just to impress the staff and show them what I could bring to the team. I’m grateful for the opportunity and ready to work hard.”

Butterfield joined Everton’s youth ranks in 2014 from Blackburn Rovers and steadily progressed through the age groups. While he did not make a first-team appearance for the Toffees in the Premier League, he was regularly involved in their U21 and U23 squads and featured in the EFL Trophy. During the 2024–25 season, he made 18 appearances across youth competitions, scoring twice and providing three assists. He was also named on the bench for Everton’s FA Cup and Carabao Cup fixtures.

Internationally, Butterfield has represented Scotland at U16 and U19 levels, earning five caps with the U19s. His experience on the international stage adds a layer of maturity to his play, and Chesterfield will be hoping he can translate that promise into consistent performances in League Two.

Manager Paul Cook praised Butterfield’s attitude and performances during his trial spell, stating:

“Luke came in with a fantastic attitude and has shown real quality in training and matches. He’s technically sharp, understands the game well, and has settled quickly into the group. We’re delighted to have him on board.”

Butterfield’s arrival bolsters Chesterfield’s midfield options, especially following the departures of experienced players such as Ollie Banks and Darren Oldaker. His youth, energy, and ability to operate in various midfield roles make him a valuable addition to the squad.

His signing is part of a busy transfer window for the Spireites, who have already secured deals for Zach Hemming, Adam Lewis, Ryan Stirk, Dilan Markanday, Lee Bonis, Devan Tanton, and Matt Dibley-Dias. With the League Two season set to kick off in early August, Butterfield will be aiming to cement his place in the starting lineup and contribute to Chesterfield’s promotion ambitions.

With a two-year deal secured, Butterfield now has the platform to make a significant impact at Chesterfield and kickstart his professional career in earnest.
