Exclusive: Blackburn Rovers in advanced talks to sign Sean McLoughlin in a multimillion deal
Blackburn Rovers are closing in on the signing of Hull City defender Sean McLoughlin, sources have told Football Insider.
The two clubs are in advanced talks over a deal that will take the 28-year-old to Ewood Park.
McLoughlin, 28, has been a long-term target for Blackburn having tried to sign him in last summer’s transfer window.
Rovers have rekindled their interest in the former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international.
Blackburn to take advantage of Hull’s financial problems
Hull are currently battling a transfer embargo, after they failed to pay Aston Villa a £1million loan fee for Louie Barry last season.
The Tigers’ permanent move for Barry was halted by the ban, and Blackburn could be set to take advantage of their financial woes.
McLoughlin’s contract expires next summer and that fact, coupled with Hull’s current situation, should mean Rovers can secure a cut-price deal.
Last season, the Irishman started 37 Championship games, starting every single match for the Tigers after the turn of the year.
With the ability to play at either left-back or centre-back, McLoughlin will bring some welcome versatility to Valerien Ismael’s side.
Hull face battle to keep defender
Meanwhile, Football Insider have exclusively revealed that Stoke City, Derby County and Wrexham are racing to sign Hull defender John Egan.
The Championship trio have all registered their interest in the 32-year-old, who impressed for Hull in the second half of last season following his arrival from Burnley in January for an undisclosed fee.
Egan could be available for a minimal fee due to the East Yorkshire club’s ongoing financial issues.
In 2024/25, the Republic of Ireland international made 11 appearances for Hull to help the Tigers secure survival in the Championship.
