Denver has officially approved a $70 million plan to acquire and prepare a 40-acre site at the former Gates Rubber Factory for a new National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) stadium. This initiative aims to establish one of the few global stadiums dedicated to women’s sports, positioning Denver as a leader in this arena. The stadium is planned to be a 14,500-seat, soccer-specific facility, complemented by an entertainment district and public park, with completion targeted for 2028.
While the stadium’s construction is to be privately funded by the team’s ownership group, led by Rob Cohen, the city plans to invest in acquiring the land and developing surrounding infrastructure, such as streets and sidewalks. However, the exact financial commitment from the city remains uncertain, as details about the funding mechanisms and total costs are still being finalized.
The project has garnered both support and criticism. Proponents, including Mayor Mike Johnston, view it as a transformative economic opportunity that will revitalize an underutilized area and bolster community engagement. Critics, however, express concerns over the city’s tight budget and the potential financial burden on taxpayers, especially given the historical challenges associated with similar stadium ventures.
In the interim, the team is set to begin play in 2026 at a temporary venue. The Cherry Creek School District has approved a plan to build a temporary stadium and training facility, which will be shared with the district post-construction.
This development marks a significant investment in women’s sports, with Denver’s franchise paying a record $110 million expansion fee to join the NWSL.
