Penalty decisions loom large in Angel City loss to Louisville
Back and forth.
That perfectly described the match between Angel City and Racing Louisville, but also the decisions from referee Elvis Osmanovic and the VAR Crew on Saturday night. Both teams scored goals from the penalty spot, and both teams also felt those should not have been their only trips to the penalty spot. More on that in a moment.
While both teams had their penalties, when it came to scoring from the run of play, Louisville was one better. Racing got goals from Taylor Flint, Emma Sears and Savannah DeMelo, and Louisville goes into the international break on a good note, as they left BMO Stadium with the 3-2 win.
“With the last two results, I think the international break comes at a good time,” Angel City midfielder Madison Hammond said. “A new coach is coming in, everything is coming at a good time. We’ve shown that we can really build on momentum, and we have to get back to who we are, get people feeling good and feeling fresh. “
Riley Tiernan continued her scorching start for Angel City, as she scored her sixth goal of the season, and Alyssa Thompson scored Angel City’s goal from the penalty spot. Still Angel City was unable to come through for head coach Sam Laity, who was coaching his final game as the head boss, as he is expected to move back into the lead assistant role to make way for Alexander Straus, who is coming over from Bayern Munich and will make his debut on the Angel City sidelines on June 7 against the Chicago Stars.
The support from the club leadership, ownership, and the technical staff were absolutely outstanding,” Laity said reflecting on his time as coach. “Any success that we’ve seen along the way and any parts of the foundation that we built, all the credit must show to the technical staff and the management leadership. They’ve all been first-class to work with and to spend time with every day, the players have been excellent, especially given that they didn’t know how long it would be until the head coach is here.”
Trailing 3-1, Angel City got the break it needed starting in the 67th minute as they were taking a corner kick. Miyabi Moriya sent the corner into the penalty area that was headed out by Flint. During the corner, Angel City’s Madison Hammond laid on the ground apparently injured, but she soon recovered. However, Osmanovic soon got the call from VAR referee Kevin Broadley to take a second look at the play, and it showed that Hammond went to ground because Louisville’s Kayla Fischer pulled Hammond by the hair. Therefore, Angel City was awarded the penalty and Fischer was sent off with a straight red card, giving Angel Ci
Angel City pressed for the equalizer. Its best chance coming in the 78th minute when Thompson sent a right-footed volley from about 25 yards out that looked like it would sneak in under the crossbar, but keeper Jordyn Bloomer got enough of her right hand on the ball to tip it over the crossbar. Then came the decision from Osmanovic that Angel City will surely lament. It happened late in the half, as Louisville’s Ellie Jean handled a ball inside the penalty area, and the replays not confirmed the handled ball, but also showed that Jean was not in anyway pulling her hand back from the ball. However, the officiating crew came to a different conclusion, and no second penalty shot was awarded to Angel City.
Louisville was almost gifted a goal in the 21st minute. A heavy touch from keeper Angelina Anderson allowed Fischer to win possession inside the penalty area, and with Anderson off her line, quickly gathered herself for a potential shot. Anderson actually tugged on Fischer’s jersey, and that tug might have had an impact on Fischer’s chance, as her shot was cleared at the line of the six-yard box by Megan Reid. The soccer gods however smiled on Louisville a moment later, as Katie O’Kane’s cross was handled by Macy Hodge, making it an easy decision for Osmanovic to send Louisville to the spot. Flint converted from the spot, going to her right, even as Anderson guessed correctly, and Louisville was up by a goal.
Louisville took the lead into the half, but Angel City equalized three minutes into the second half. Tiernan received a pass from Gisele Thompson, dribbled about 10 yards into the penalty area, then unleashed a right footed volley that sailed past Bloomer at the far post for a spectacular goal that tied the match at one.
“In training we focus a lot on getting the shot off as quick as you can,” Tiernan said of her goal. “I was in a dangerous spot, top of the box, and I put my head up for a second, hit it and it went in the net.”
However, just as quickly as Angel City had gotten themselves back into the match, Louisville reasserted themselves with two goals inside a three-minute span. Sears put Louisville back in front in the 53rd minute, and Savannah DeMelo doubled the lead three minutes later.
