In a remarkable act of philanthropy, world-ranked tennis star Jessica Pegula has announced that she is investing her entire $10.5 million season bonus to convert one of her private residences into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth. The initiative, unveiled during a press conference in Buffalo, New York, aims to provide safe housing, education, and mental health support for vulnerable young people across the region.
Pegula, currently ranked among the top five in the WTA, said the decision was inspired by her desire to create lasting impact off the court. “Winning titles is fulfilling, but using my platform to change lives is even more meaningful,” she stated. “This project is about giving young people a second chance and a safe place to call home.”
The property, a 12-bedroom estate formerly used as a family retreat, will be transformed into a 24-hour transitional housing facility named “The Serve Center.” The shelter will offer emergency beds, long-term accommodations, life skills training, and access to counseling and educational resources. Pegula is partnering with local nonprofit organizations and the Pegula Family Foundation to ensure the facility is staffed with trained professionals and equipped with modern amenities.
Construction is set to begin this summer, with the goal of opening the doors by early 2026. The project will also include a community garden, recreational spaces, and a digital learning hub to support residents’ personal and academic growth.
This initiative marks Pegula’s most significant philanthropic effort to date, though she has long been involved in charitable work through her family’s foundation, which supports youth programs, health services, and community development initiatives. Her parents, Terry and Kim Pegula, owners of the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres, have also pledged additional funding to expand the shelter’s reach and sustainability.
Community leaders have lauded Pegula’s commitment. “Jessica’s generosity is a game-changer for our city,” said Mayor Byron Brown. “This shelter will not only provide immediate relief for homeless youth but also empower them to build brighter futures.”
Pegula emphasized that the project is just the beginning of her long-term commitment to social causes. “My goal is to inspire others in the sports world and beyond to take action,” she said. “We all have a role to play in creating a more compassionate and equitable society.”
As Pegula continues her ascent in the tennis world, her off-court endeavors are setting a powerful example of how athletes can leverage their success to make a meaningful difference in their communities.
