Man stabbed to death in Shawnee neighborhood, Louisville police say

A man locally known as the “Canvas Man” was fatally stabbed in Louisville’s Shawnee neighborhood, according to police.

The Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) confirmed that officers responded to a call about a stabbing in the 600 block of South 41st Street on Friday evening. When officers arrived at the scene around 6:30 p.m., they discovered a man suffering from multiple stab wounds. Emergency Medical Services were called immediately, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim has been identified by community members as the “Canvas Man,” a familiar figure in the neighborhood known for his distinctive habit of wearing or carrying painted canvases as part of his attire. Though authorities have not released his official name, residents described him as a peaceful individual who often walked through the area displaying his artwork.

Neighbors expressed shock and sadness over the incident. “He was always around, just doing his thing with his paintings,” said Marsha Green, a local resident. “It’s heartbreaking. He didn’t deserve this.”

Police have not disclosed any information regarding possible suspects or motives behind the stabbing. The LMPD Homicide Unit is currently investigating and asking anyone with information to come forward.

“This is a tragic loss for the community,” said LMPD spokesperson Alicia Smiley. “We are doing everything we can to find out who is responsible for this crime.”

Canvas Man was something of a local icon in the Shawnee neighborhood. He would frequently be seen walking up and down the streets with canvases draped over his shoulders or affixed to his clothing. His presence was often considered a symbol of quiet resilience and creative expression.

“He brought a little color to our streets — literally and figuratively,” said Terrance Boyd, who owns a nearby barber shop. “Everybody knew him. He didn’t bother nobody.”

The news of his death has sparked grief and concern among community members, some of whom are calling for increased safety measures in the area. While the Shawnee neighborhood has faced challenges with violence in recent years, many say that incidents like this one cut especially deep when they involve individuals known and loved by the community.

LMPD officials say they are canvassing the area for surveillance footage and interviewing potential witnesses. As of Saturday morning, no arrests had been made.

Anyone with information related to the stabbing is encouraged to contact the LMPD Crime Tip Hotline at (502) 574-LMPD (5673). Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the department’s online portal.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Community members are planning a candlelight vigil for the Canvas Man later this week to honor his life and legacy. Details of the vigil will be shared once finalized.

“He didn’t say much, but his art said plenty,” Green added. “Now the streets feel a little dimmer without him.”

This tragic loss has left many questioning the safety of their neighborhood, while also remembering the impact one quiet, artistic soul had on an entire community.
