Dawn Staley Statue Unveiling In Columbia ,SC: Aja Wilson sends powerful Tribute
A moment of history unfolded in downtown Columbia as a statue of legendary basketball coach Dawn Staley was unveiled, drawing a crowd of fans, former players, and city officials to honor one of South Carolina’s most influential sports figures.
The ceremony, held on the steps of the Columbia Convention Center, featured heartfelt tributes, emotional speeches, and a resounding sense of gratitude for the woman who transformed the University of South Carolina’s women’s basketball program into a national powerhouse. Among those paying tribute was WNBA superstar A’ja Wilson, one of Staley’s most celebrated former players, whose stirring words captured the magnitude of the moment.
“Coach Staley didn’t just coach us; she believed in us. She saw greatness in us even before we saw it ourselves,” Wilson said. “This statue isn’t just for her — it’s for every little Black girl who dreams big, works hard, and leads with love.”
The statue, crafted by nationally renowned sculptor Basil Watson, captures Staley in her iconic game-day attire, whistle in hand and a determined look on her face. It stands not only as a tribute to her on-court achievements but also as a symbol of her cultural and social impact.
Staley, a Philadelphia native and three-time Olympic gold medalist, took over the Gamecocks program in 2008. Under her leadership, the team has captured multiple SEC titles and two NCAA National Championships (2017, 2022), elevating the Gamecocks to elite status in collegiate basketball. She has also been an outspoken advocate for racial justice, gender equality, and opportunities for women in sports.
The unveiling ceremony featured appearances by university officials, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, and Columbia Mayor Daniel Rickenmann. In her address, Staley reflected on her journey and the significance of the statue.
“This isn’t just about basketball. It’s about breaking barriers and building bridges,” Staley said. “I want this statue to stand as a reminder that dreams can be realized, especially when a community lifts you up.”
A’ja Wilson, who helped lead the Gamecocks to their first national title in 2017, credited Staley with shaping her into the woman and athlete she is today. Wilson, now a two-time WNBA MVP, became emotional as she spoke about her former coach’s influence.
“She was tough on me because she knew what I could become,” Wilson said. “She loved us like her own. And today, we show her that love right back.”
Fans in attendance wore garnet and black, waving Gamecocks flags and holding handmade signs expressing admiration for Staley. The energy was electric as cheers erupted when the statue was finally revealed, draped in a banner that read “Forever to Thee.”
For many, the moment was about more than sports — it was a recognition of resilience, leadership, and the power of representation. As the sun set over Columbia, the statue stood tall, reflecting both light and legacy.
“This is herstory,” said former Gamecock guard Tyasha Harris. “And we’re all lucky to be part of it.”
With this statue, Columbia has cemented Dawn Staley’s place not only in South Carolina lore but also in the broader tapestry of American sports history.
