An unidentified 17-year-old has been arrested on multiple charges, including driving without a license, after a chase and crash Saturday night that sent four people to the hospital.
Around 9 p.m., Virginia State Police (VSP) responded to mile marker 58 of the express lanes on Interstate 66 for a report of car on the left shoulder with someone inside. When troopers approached the driver, they eported the individual was acting “weirdly” and said they saw narcotics in the car. The troopers said they asked the driver several times to turn the car off, but the driver refused and eventually drove away. VSP pursued the vehicle eastbound in the express lanes.
Attempts to stop the car were unsuccessful. Both the teen and a pursuing trooper lost control in the median. The trooper’s vehicle struck a Honda CR-V in the westbound express lanes, while the teen continued driving.
The teen later exited onto westbound Route 50 and turned onto a residential street, which ended in a cul-de-sac. Troopers arrested the driver on charges of eluding police, driving without a license and reckless driving. There was no mention of whether the teen was speeding or under the influence during the chase.
The driver of the Honda, a 4-year-old child in the vehicle and the trooper involved were transported to a nearby hospital, treated and later released. A woman who was also a passenger in the Honda was kept overnight for observation but is expected to recover from her injuries.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be pending for the teen.
