Netflix Set to Release Long-Awaited Documentary on Aston Villa FC

Football fans across the globe, and particularly those devoted to Aston Villa, have a major reason to celebrate as Netflix has officially confirmed the release of a long-anticipated documentary chronicling the rich history and modern resurgence of the storied Birmingham-based football club.

Titled “Claret & Blue: The Aston Villa Story,” the documentary promises to offer an in-depth look at one of English football’s oldest and most iconic teams. The six-part series, set to premiere globally next month, will dive deep into Villa’s journey from its founding in 1874, through its triumphs, struggles, and the club’s passionate fan base that has remained loyal through thick and thin.

Aston Villa, one of the founding members of the Football League, boasts an illustrious past, including seven First Division titles and a famous European Cup victory in 1982. However, the documentary doesn’t merely linger on past glories. Instead, it also highlights the club’s rollercoaster ride in recent decades — from the dramatic relegation to the Championship in 2016 to its stunning return to the Premier League and subsequent push towards re-establishing itself as a top-flight force.

According to Netflix, the series will feature never-before-seen footage from inside the club, exclusive interviews with key figures, and behind-the-scenes access to boardroom decisions, training ground dynamics, and matchday preparations at Villa Park. Viewers will also hear directly from some of the club’s modern heroes, including captain John McGinn, manager Unai Emery, and Villa legends like Paul McGrath and Ian Taylor. Contributions from loyal supporters, including celebrity fans such as Tom Hanks and Ozzy Osbourne, will add a personal and emotional touch to the narrative.

Lisa Nishimura, Netflix’s Vice President of Documentary and Independent Films, said in a press release, “We are thrilled to bring Claret & Blue to a global audience. Aston Villa’s story is one of resilience, tradition, and passion. This documentary captures not just the footballing milestones but also the deep connection between the club and its community.”

The project has been in the works for over two years, with an experienced production team behind successful football documentaries like Sunderland ‘Til I Die and All or Nothing: Manchester City at the helm. The filmmakers were given unprecedented access to players, coaching staff, and the club’s inner workings during the 2023-24 season, a campaign that saw Villa pushing for a coveted European qualification spot.

Aston Villa CEO Christian Purslow also shared his excitement, stating, “We are immensely proud to have opened our doors to this project. The documentary reflects the soul of Aston Villa, from the terraces of Holte End to the strategy meetings at Bodymoor Heath. We hope fans everywhere will see how special this club truly is.”
