Netflix Set to Release 2025 Documentary on Montreal Canadiens Titled: “One Play, One Win”

Netflix is set to deliver a powerful new addition to its sports documentary lineup with One Play, One Win, a behind-the-scenes look at the Montreal Canadiens and their thrilling 2024-2025 season. Slated for release in December 2025, this feature-length documentary dives deep into the passion, legacy, and resilience of one of the most iconic teams in professional sports.

The Montreal Canadiens, a franchise synonymous with hockey history and tradition, become the focal point of a story about perseverance and unity in the face of adversity. The title, One Play, One Win, reflects the central theme that the smallest moments—one shift, one save, one goal—can define an entire season.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Sophie Tremblay, known for her evocative work on documentaries like The Summit: Everest Untold and Beyond the Blue Line, this project marks her first foray into NHL storytelling. “The Canadiens are more than a hockey team; they’re a symbol of Montreal’s heart and soul,” Tremblay said in a press release. “This documentary captures what happens when a group of athletes, a city, and generations of fans come together around a common purpose.”

The documentary follows the Canadiens from the opening days of training camp through a rollercoaster regular season and into a dramatic playoff run. Along the way, Tremblay and her crew had unprecedented access to locker rooms, team meetings, and player homes, allowing viewers to witness the personal side of the team’s stars.

At the core of the narrative are key figures such as captain Nick Suzuki, breakout winger Cole Caufield, and goaltender Samuel Montembeault, who emerged as a cornerstone of the Canadiens’ success this season. From Caufield’s overtime heroics to Suzuki’s leadership both on and off the ice, One Play, One Win paints a portrait of a young, hungry team determined to restore the Canadiens’ championship pedigree.

But the film isn’t just about wins and losses. It also explores the mental and emotional weight of playing under the spotlight in one of hockey’s most demanding markets. In candid interviews, players and coaches discuss the pressure of living up to the Canadiens’ historic legacy, with 24 Stanley Cups casting a long shadow over every practice and game.

Former Canadiens greats like Guy Carbonneau and Carey Price make appearances, offering context on what it means to wear the iconic “CH” on the chest and what the city expects from its beloved team. The documentary also highlights the deep connection between the Canadiens and Montreal’s diverse communities, showcasing fan reactions, family stories, and the ways hockey unites generations across Quebec.

Tremblay’s filmmaking style focuses heavily on authenticity, with raw, unscripted moments that show the bonds between players as they navigate the ups and downs of the NHL grind. Injuries, trades, and setbacks are presented with unflinching honesty, while the joys of winning streaks and playoff triumphs provide moments of pure exhilaration.

Netflix executives describe One Play, One Win as more than just a hockey documentary. “It’s a universal story of ambition, resilience, and community,” said Netflix’s head of sports content, Marc Delaney. “Whether you’re a die-hard Canadiens fan or new to the sport, this film will resonate with anyone who understands the power of sports to inspire and unite.”

With critics already drawing comparisons to some of Netflix’s most successful sports docs like Formula 1: Drive to Survive and The Last Dance, anticipation for One Play, One Win is running high.

One Play, One Win will debut exclusively on Netflix on December 15, 2025, with French and English versions available to honor the team’s bilingual roots.
