Red Sox set to Swing Blockbuster Trade for $260 Million 8-Time All-Star

Red Sox Predicted to Swing Blockbuster Trade for $260 Million 8-Time All-Star

Nolan Arenado is one of the best third basemen of this generation and reportedly is open to being traded. The St. Louis Cardinals have yet to find a trade partner for him, but as opening day gets closer, the Boston Red Sox could make a move for the superstar.

“After exhausting attempts to sign Bregman, the Red Sox pivot to Arenado as the St. Louis Cardinals start to exhibit a bit of desperation with the season approaching,” wrote Rogers. “The fit in St. Louis just isn’t right anymore and everyone knows it. The Cardinals aren’t concerned with money owed to Arenado, so they’re willing to pick up a portion of it because they want quality prospects in return. Boston can deliver that.”

Arenado signed an eight-year, $260 million deal with the Colorado Rockies. He was then traded to the Cardinals and will be a free agent in 2028. He is an eight-time All-Star, five-time Silver Slugger, 10-time Gold Glover and six-time Platinum Glover.

Trading for Arenado would allow the Red Sox to move Rafael Devers to first base and be comfortable trading Triston Casas. Last season Arenado hit 16 home runs and had a .272 batting average.

The Red Sox may be more willing than other suitors to take on a larger portion of Arenado’s contract. The Red Sox were in the Juan Soto sweepstakes earlier this winter and are not scared to spend. If the market for Arenado heats up, the Red Sox could simply outbid other teams by taking on more of his salary.

It’s becoming harder and harder to envision Alex Bregman landing with the Boston Red Sox.

Bregman, arguably the best hitter left in free agency, has been connected to Boston since the start of the offseason. Various reports indicated he was destined to sign with the Red Sox; others suggested Boston preferred a trade for St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado.

So, what’s the hang-up? Alex Speier of The Boston Globe provided insight in a piece published last Saturday.

“According to multiple industry sources, (the Red Sox’s) conversations this offseason with Bregman (represented by agent Scott Boras) have focused on deals of a shorter term than what he seeks,” Speier wrote. “Earlier in the offseason, Bregman rejected a reported six-year, $156 million offer from the Astros, seeking both more years and a larger guarantee.

“The Sox have remained engaged on Bregman, but multiple sources said earlier this week, the team’s interest had been in a deal of no more than four years. For now, it appears unlikely Bregman would accept a contract of that length given a report by Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 in Houston that Bregman has received five-year offers from ‘at least three’ teams this offseason. Alexander also reported that both Bregman and the Astros (with whom he’s spent his entire career) are now ‘keeping the door open’ to a reunion.”

Bregman, who’ll turn 31 in March, hit .260 with 26 homers and a .768 OPS in 145 games for the Astros last season. He also won his first American League Gold Glove Award at third base.

With the Red Sox set to begin spring training on Feb. 12, time might be running out for them to strike a deal with Bregman.
