Penn State adds transfer commitment from Big Ten school

Penn State is expected to be in need of some depth on the defensive line in 2025 following some key departures to the NFL either by early declarations or graduations. While Penn State did learn one key starter on the defensive line is set to come back in 2025 with Zane Durant sharing his decision, the Nittany Lions also picked up a commitment out of the transfer portal from another Big Ten program.

Owen Wafle, a three-star edge rusher from New Jersey and a member of Michigan‘s Class of 2024, announced his commitment to Penn State with a post on social media on Saturday evening. The former Hun School product entered the NCAA transfer portal on Jan. 2 after spending just one fall in Ann Arbor.

Penn State was not really in the mix for Wafle’s recruitment out of high school. As fate would have it, Wafle originally committed to Notre Dame, the school that just eliminated Penn State from the College Football Playoff, in the spring of 2022 but he flipped his commitment to Michigan about a year later. Wafle confirmed his commitment to the Wolverines in the summer of 2023 and signed his letter of intent with Michigan that December.

Wafle will have four years of eligibility remaining as he joins the Penn State football program.

One thing to watch now will be the ongoing recruitment of Wafle’s younger brother, Luke Wafle. Luke Wafle is a four-star edge rusher drawing plenty of attention from college football programs. Among the offers in Luke’s hands already is one from Penn State, with Deion Barnes hoping to establish a strong connection with the family after helping secure a transfer commitment from Owen.
