Holbrooks update: Major $90 million upgrade set to transform western suburbs intersection
Detailed plans have been revealed for the realignment of the Grange Road, Holbrooks Road, and East Avenue intersection, providing residents and commuters with an initial glimpse of the enhanced junction’s operation.
The $90 million upgrade project will entail the removal of the existing ‘dogleg’ intersection by repositioning Holbrooks Road and East Avenue, streamlining movement across Grange Road at Beverley for increased efficiency.
Feedback from the community, including input from members of the local Allenby Gardens Primary School community, was solicited on the concept design in late 2023. Responses were incorporated into the final project design.
Considerable feedback, particularly centered on enhancing pedestrian safety, led to the decision to introduce a new Pedestrian Actuated Crossing at Grange Road between Hallett Boulevard and Coombe Road. This new crossing, jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian governments, will be installed before major construction begins, improving pedestrian accessibility and safety.
“We have listened to feedback from the community to help shape the project design, with a new Pedestrian Actuated Crossing to be installed at Grange Road between Hallett Boulevard and Coombe Road – something the local school community has advocated strongly for,” Minister of infrastrucutre and transport Tom Koutsantonis said.
“A left-turn lane from Grange Road onto Holbrooks Road will also be included in the project design following our thorough community consultation.
“We will continue to work through and consider community feedback and complete further technical investigations and planning work prior to commencing major works later this year.”
Additionally, following feedback and further technical assessments, a dedicated left-turn lane from Grange Road onto Holbrooks Road will be included in the project design.
Main construction is slated to commence in early 2025, with the project anticipated to be open to traffic by late 2025, supporting approximately 90 jobs during its implementation.
Part of a broader initiative to enhance intersections near the River Torrens to Darlington Project, this upgrade will ensure the efficient functioning of the Adelaide road network during and after the T2D Project construction. It will notably enhance traffic flow by creating two new through-lanes in each direction directly linking Holbrooks Road and East Avenue.
