Fabian Lysell made his NHL debut on Saturday for the Bruins and was assigned to Providence the following day. Boston’s top prospect didn’t have a bad game, make any sizable mistakes and he provided some speed to his line with Trent Frederic and Justin Brazeau.
Lysell logged 11:32 of ice time and helped make Brazeau’s first-period goal happen on his first shift of the game with a strong net-front presence and creating a little havoc in Boston’s 4-0 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
His assignment back to the AHL had many wondering if it was a paper transaction in order to be cap compliant, but Lysell wasn’t on the ice for practice at Warrior Ice Arena on Monday morning, meaning he’ll remain in Providence for the time being.
Interim coach Joe Sacco was asked what the message was for Lysell when they told him he’d be heading back to the AHL.
“The message was basically that he didn’t hurt his chances, obviously, for another opportunity at some point,” Sacco told reporters. “He played a good game, did some good things out there. And was an opportunity for him to get up his first NHL game, because he got it based on his play, it was based on merit. He’s done a good job in Providence and I think the message is, ‘Continue to build on your game. You did not hurt your chances for another opportunity up here at some point.’”
Sacco added that the Bruins will go with a different lineup for their Tuesday matinee against the Capitals. Washington boasts a hefty, physical lineup — and one the Bruins will need to make adjustments for.
