Two teenagers on a moped have been seriously injured in a crash after allegedly failing to stop for police.
A white Honda moped was seen by officers at 23:50 GMT on Monday in Portsmouth, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police said.
The vehicle travelled from Somers Road and was in collision with a silver BMW at the junction of Richmond Road and Clarendon Road.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating.
A police spokesman said the moped, which was carrying a rider and passenger, “failed to stop” for the marked police car after officers spotted one of the riders was not wearing a crash helmet.
The riders were seen on Somers Road and travelled along Margate Road, Victoria Road North and Victoria Road South.
‘Thoughts with boys’
The boys, one from Portsmouth and the other from Southsea, “suffered serious and life-threatening injuries”, the spokesman said, adding they were both being treated in hospital.
Officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam, CCTV or doorbell footage from along the route to get in touch.
No arrests have been made.
The IOPC confirmed it was investigating after being contacted by the force.
An IOPC spokesman said: “Our thoughts are with the boys and their families and all those who have been affected by this incident.
“Our investigation is at an early stage and no further information is available at this time.”
Boy, 17, arrested on suspicion of attempted murder
A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a man was attacked in Southampton.
The 18-year-old was found in Hill Lane at about 01:10 GMT on Sunday with serious injuries to his back and his wrist, thought to have been caused by a knife.
He remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said.
The boy, from Southampton, remains in police custody.
Officers have closed parts of Hill Lane and Milton Road while they investigate.
Anyone who saw anything suspicious or out of place is asked to contact the police.
Appeal following serious collision in Southsea
We are appealing for witnesses following a serious collision in Southsea.
At about 11.50pm yesterday eveningin Somers Road, police in a marked vehicle spotted a white Honda moped with a rider and a pillion passenger.
The rider of the moped failed to stop, continuing along Margate Road, Victoria Road North and Victoria Road South.
The moped was then involved in a collision with a silver BMW 1 series at the junction of Richmond Road and Clarendon Road.
The two teenage boys on the moped, one from Portsmouth and one from Southsea, suffered serious and life-threatening injuries and have been taken to hospital, where they are currently being treated.
No arrests have been made at this stage.
As part of our investigation, we are appealing for any witnesses to come forward, as well as anyone with CCTV or doorbell camera footage along the route taken by the moped.
We would also particularly like to speak to anyone with relevant dash cam footage of the collision or the police pursuit.
As is normal practice in these situations, the matter has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
