Kentucky Wildcats Head Coach Mark Pope has confirmed several notable players for the 2025 season, building on a solid recruiting class with an emphasis on skill, experience, and versatility. Pope, a Kentucky alum who joined from BYU, is bringing a different style to the program compared to his predecessor John Calipari. Instead of focusing solely on one-and-done NBA-bound recruits, Pope is targeting a mix of high-caliber transfers and recruits with a strong potential for team play.
Among the confirmed recruits are two five-star talents: Jasper Johnson, a 6’4” guard with exceptional scoring ability and shooting range, and Malachi Moreno, a 6’11” center ranked among the top big men nationwide. Johnson’s agility and Moreno’s powerful presence in the paint provide Kentucky with a balanced inside-outside combination. Johnson and Moreno’s commitments have already propelled Kentucky to a top-five recruiting class, with other high-level prospects showing interest in joining as well
In addition to high school recruits, Pope has effectively used the transfer portal to add experienced players. For example, Andrew Carr from Wake Forest, a skilled big man, is expected to play a central role in Kentucky’s offense, likely through pick-and-roll action. Shooters such as Koby Brea(Dayton) and Kerr Kriisa (West Virginia) add depth to the backcourt, both boasting excellent three-point shooting percentages. Lamont Butler from San Diego State brings valuable leadership and Final Four experience to round out a team that will rely on a deep bench rather than a few standout stars
This new era under Pope promises a strategic shift, focusing more on teamwork and versatility rather than individual dominance. His experience building depth and cohesive team play at BYU aligns well with his approach at Kentucky, marking a departure from Calipari’s star-focused teams. As Kentucky enters SEC competition, the depth, experience, and adaptability of Pope’s lineup could make them competitive in a challenging conference season
