Olympic gold medalist Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone to be honored in Dunellen
The cheers swelled inside the Dunellen Theatre on Aug. 8, erupting into a roar as fans watched Dunellen native Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone finish first in the 400-meter hurdles at the Paris Olympic Games.
It earned her a gold medal and her sixth world record, with a time of 50.37 seconds. She also earned gold in the 4×400 relay, making her a four-time Olympic gold medalist.
At 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, Dunellen will host a homecoming ceremony for the track star at Columbia Park, 200 Orange St. — and fans can cheer McLaughlin-Levrone in person.
The event will include speakers from the state, county, borough, Dunellen Public Schools and Union Catholic High School, as well as McLaughlin-Levrone herself. Officials will offer words of congratulations, and provide official resolutions recognizing McLaughlin-Levrone’s accomplishments.
Nearly 2,000 people are expected to attend the 90-minute ceremony at the park. It’s home to the track where McLaughlin-Levrone trained as a child, now called the Sydney McLaughlin Track.
Public parking will be at the Dunellen Train Station and on surrounding streets; handicap parking will be at the Columbia Park parking lot at the end of Orange Street. There will be no parking on Columbia Street and Orange Street. Columbia Park will only be accessible through Orange Street.
