So Sad: Mississippi State Key Player is gone due to…

Mississippi State first-year football coach Jeff Lebby did not have an update on the availability status of starting cornerback Kelley Jones during his weekly Monday press conference ahead of this Saturday’s Southeastern Conference opener against Florida at Davis Wade Stadium.

Jones, a redshirt freshman from Clarksdale, was a surprise inactive for Mississippi State’s Week 3 41-17 home loss to Toledo, seen on the Bulldogs’ sideline in street clothes. He had started the previous two games at cornerback, making six total tackles.

With Jones out, Mississippi State moved starting nickel safety Brylan Lanier to cornerback, and brought in Chris Keys Jr. off the bench to play safety. The move was rather unsuccessful with Toledo quarterback Tucker Gleason completing 23 of 28 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns.

Dinkins, a sophomore defensive lineman, has not played since being injured in the first half of Mississippi State’s season-opening win over Eastern Kentucky. He recorded his first-career sack before the injury.

For the first time this season, Mississippi State (1-2) will be subjected to SEC injury reports beginning Wednesday. Injury reports are being used by the conference in only league games this season.

Mississippi State was also missing true freshman wide receiver Braylon Burnside in Saturday’s loss to the Rockets. Lebby, following the game, said the Burnside will be available against the Gators (11 a.m/ESPN) at Davis Wade Stadium.

The Bulldogs were missing a handful of other secondary pieces on Saturday, including veteran safety Corey Ellington and transfer cornerbacks Traveon Wright and DeAgo Brumfield. Ellington has not played this season after suffering an undisclosed injury in preseason camp. Wright, a transfer from Memphis, made his Mississippi State debut in its Week 2 road loss at Arizona State, but was seen in street clothes with a boot on his right foot ahead of Saturday’s game against Toledo. Brumfield, another Memphis transfer, dressed for the first time this season against the Rockets, but has yet to play.

Following the game, Lebby said the team is preparing to not have Wright and Brumfield available for Mississippi State’s game against the Gators.

Lebby also announced following the game that offensive lineman Leon Bell would not be part of the program “for the remainder of the season”. If that is a permanent move is unknown.

Florida (1-2) is coming off of a 33-20 home loss to Texas A&M, in which it did not score in the first half.
