SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. — Two people were killed after a serious crash between two cars Sunday afternoon on U.S. Highway 41 near Seminole Drive, Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.
The crash shut down the northbound lanes of U.S. 41 for several hours, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office posted on X.
One car was reportedly traveling north on the outside travel lane of U.S. 41 approaching the intersection of Seminole Drive. Another car was traveling east on Seminole, approaching the intersection of US 41, troopers said.
Both cars entered the intersection at the same time before colliding, according to the agency. The car that was traveling north reportedly hit a traffic control cabinet, control mast and sign.
The driver and a passenger in that car were pronounced dead at the scene while the remaining passenger was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, according to the sheriff’s office.
Right now, deputies are investigating which of the two cars entered the intersection on a green light, the agency said.
