Police operation closes M4 in Merrylands, Sydney

Motorists have been told to avoid the area.

Long delays caused headaches for commuters on the M4 in western Sydney on Friday morning as the major motorway was closed during a police operation.

All westbound and eastbound lanes of the motorway in Merrylands were closed between Burnett St and the Cumberland Hwy.

The road has since reopened.

Motorists are, however, still urged to allow extra travel time as traffic eases.

7NEWS understands the operation is due to a mental health incident.

There is no ongoing threat to the public.
