KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City soccer fans will get to see Brazilian soccer player Debinha wear the teal and heartland red for the near future.
The Kansas City Current announced Friday it had reached a new contract with Debina that keeps her with the club through 2026 with an option for 2027.
Debinha, 32, is in her second full season with the club after spending several seasons with the North Carolina Courage in the NWSL. She’s been named to the NWSL’s Best XI the past two seasons.
She’s credited with one goal and three assists in the Current’s 2024 NWSL campaign.
The Current return to action at 6:30 p.m. this coming Saturday, Sept. 7, against the Utah Royals at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. Fans who can’t make it to the pitch can watch the game on 38 The Spot/ION in the Kansas City area.
KC Current returns to win column thanks to (yet another) goal by Temwa Chawinga
At CPKC Stadium on Saturday, Temwa Chawinga scored for the eighth consecutive game, and the Kansas City Current defense preserved a clean sheet to defeat Utah Royals FC 1-0.
The Current had lost three straight NWSL regular-season games before this triumph.
KC’s fast and fierce intensity was back in the first half. However, despite multiple opportunities in the first ten minutes, there was never a certain chance. It took the Current over forty minutes to attempt a shot on goal.
The game was scoreless at the interval thanks to a spectacular double save by current goalie Almuth Schult in the eighteenth minute.
Early in the second half, Chawinga left her imprint. In the 47th minute, the Utah Royals won a corner kick, and Lo LaBonta of Kansas City received the rebound. LaBonta took a touch forward, and the Current soon had a three-on-two advantage.
Chawinga was able to sprint onto LaBonta’s ideal pass and tuck it into the goal. With this goal, Chawinga has scored 15 for the season and is still in the lead in the Golden Boot competition. This season, in 18 games, she has contributed 21 goals in total.
The focus of The Current is currently on a very difficult portion of the 2024 season. The Current (11-3-5) is currently ranked third in the NWSL. The following three games for KC will be against other top-four teams.
The first game comes on the road on Friday against the Orlando Pride. Seven o’clock Central Time is kickoff.
