‘Those who had the privilege to work with her will know just how passionate she was about her shows’

A BBC icon has died just weeks after filming for her new show started. Jude Tindall was behind a number of BBC shows including the hit series Shakespeare & Hathaway and Sister Boniface Mysteries.

Filming for season four of drama Sister Boniface Mysteries – which will star Les Dennis – had just started when Tindall died. Tributes have since been paid by BBC bosses, who have described her as a ‘brilliant writer’.

A re-run of season one of Sister Boniface Mysteries will pay tribute to the star, the BBC said. In a statement, BBC Studios said: “We’re sorry to share the news of the sad passing of the much-loved creator of Sister Boniface, co-creator of Shakespeare and Hathaway and master of cosy crime, Jude Tindall.

Those who had the privilege to work with her will know just how passionate she was about her shows and how generous she was in helping to develop the next generation of writers and producers.

“She’ll be deeply missed by the BBC Studios Drama team and our thoughts remain with her family. With Sister Boniface Series 1 starting on BBC One this Friday, the first episode will be dedicated to Jude’s memory.”

UKTV channel U&Dave also paid tribute to Tindall following her death. It said: “We’re sorry to have to share the news of the sad passing of much-loved creator of Sister Boniface & co-creator of Shakespeare & Hathaway, Jude Tindall.

“Our thoughts remain with her friends. What are your fondest memories from the work Jude created.” Tindall also worked on medical soaps Doctors and Casualty, Mirror reports.

Fans also paid tribute to her following her death. One said: “So sorry to hear this sad news. Jude was an excellent writer. Thinking of her family and friends at this very sad time.”

Another added: “Two great shows. So sorry to hear of Jude Tindall passing. RIP.” Someone else commented: “This is sad. She was a clever writer.”

In 2022, Jude opened up about Sister Boniface Mysteries when actress Lorna Watson – who appeared in the first series of Father Brown – made her small-screen comeback as Sister Boniface. Tindall explained: “Since Lorna bounced so joyfully into season one of Father Brown, I always had a plan to bring her back.

“Now that plan has come to fruition, I couldn’t be more thrilled.” Set in the 1960s, it sees fictional town Great Slaughter’s police department use their secret weapon for solving murder mysteries – Sister Boniface of St Vincent’s Convent.
