Craig Cescon has a professional hockey career that spans 13 years, three different North American minor leagues and two leagues in Europe.

The Pensacola Ice Flyers are set to become his next team.

Cescon, a journeyman defenseman, who turned 33 on Aug. 18 and could likely be the Ice Flyers oldest player, was recently signed to a free-agent contract.

The 6-foot-2, 209-pound Cescon, a native of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, is planning to make the Ice Flyers and Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) his fourth different, U.S.-based minor league, to compete.

“I’ve heard great things about the organization, fan base and city, which made my decision very easy,” said Cescon, in a news release provided by the Ice Flyers. Cescon spent last season with the Fort Wayne (Ind.) Komets in the ECHL, playing in 47 games.

“I’m looking forward to October and working toward our main goal, bringing a championship (back) to Pensacola,” he said in the news release.

The Ice Flyers, three-time SPHL champions, have two trophies earned with coach Rod Aldoff behind the bench. Aldoff has known Cescon for quite awhile and reached out to him to get a commitment for the upcoming season.

“Craig comes to us with a world of experience and tremendous reputation,” said Aldoff, back for his fifth full season as Ice Flyers coach. “His leadership and personality are what you need to win. “Craig plays a tough, hard game and is reliable everywhere on the ice.

“I’m excited to have a player of his experience on our team and I look forward to having him and his family in Pensacola this season.”

After spending his first five seasons playing in the ECHL, IHL and CHL in the U.S, spent a season playing for the Braehead Clan of the Elite Ice Hockey League in Great Britain. After returning for the 2013-14 season with the Tulsa Oilers in the Central Hockey League (CHL), he returned to the UK the following season to play for the Coventry Blaze.

That was followed in the 2015-16 season for the Morizine-Avoiriaz-Les Gets in the professional league in France.

He has played in 606 pro games with 24 goals, 87 assists and has also fought his way on the ice into 1,656 penalty minutes.

The Ice Flyers will open their season in Pensacola on Oct. 18-19 against the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs.
