Iron Maiden’s Nicko McBrain Confronts Drumming Hurdles Following Mini-Stroke
Nicko McBrain, the renowned drummer of Iron Maiden, has shared the ongoing challenges he faces in his recovery from a mini-stroke he experienced in January 2023. The stroke temporarily paralyzed one side of his body, raising concerns about his future in drumming. Although he has made notable progress, McBrain has admitted that his precision on some of his iconic drum parts is not yet at its previous level.
To adapt, McBrain has modified his drumming technique, including changes to certain fills in the song “Caught Somewhere in Time” as he continues to rebuild strength and dexterity in his fingers. He estimates his recovery to be around 85 to 90 percent complete but is still working on enhancing his speed and strength.
Support from his bandmates, particularly bassist Steve Harris, and his fans has been crucial during this period. McBrain remains hopeful and is committed to achieving full recovery to return to his best performance .
