Boleskine House, the historic mansion on the southern shore of Loch Ness, is a place steeped in mystery and intrigue. Once owned by the infamous occultist Aleister Crowley, it later became the property of Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, who was drawn to its enigmatic history. This 18th-century B-listed building has faced significant challenges, having been twice ravaged by fire, most recently in 2015.
Despite its turbulent past, Boleskine House has found new life thanks to the efforts of Keith and Kyra Readdy, who purchased the estate and established the Boleskine House Foundation to oversee its restoration. Trustee Mark Lidster acknowledged the difficulties posed by the fires, describing them as a “huge blow” to the preservation efforts. He noted that the intentional blaze removed valuable clues that could aid in the restoration process, particularly given the building’s historical significance and the challenges of obtaining insurance.
The restoration is estimated to cost £1.5 million, with funds being raised through private investment, crowdfunding, and potential grants, recognizing Boleskine’s cultural importance. The project aims to transform the house into a public venue for holidays and recreation, contributing to the local economy and community engagement.
Boleskine House has long been a source of fascination due to its association with Crowley, who purchased it in 1899 as an ideal location for his occult rituals. These practices reportedly required extensive preparation and strict discipline, which Crowley, known for his indulgent lifestyle, struggled to maintain. Legends tell of demons left behind and a series of tragic events linked to the house, including the deaths of Crowley’s lodge keeper’s children.
The mansion’s allure continued with Page’s ownership in the 1970s. The guitarist, influenced by Crowley’s writings, believed Boleskine could inspire his music. However, his tenure coincided with a series of unfortunate events for Led Zeppelin, including personal tragedies and the band’s eventual disbandment.
Boleskine’s restoration signifies a new chapter, aiming to preserve its architectural heritage and cultural significance while shedding light on its storied past. The Foundation’s vision for the estate seeks to honor its historical legacy while promoting community enrichment and sustainable tourism.
