Director Reveals How Ghost of Tsushima Inspired the Creation of Star Wars Outlaws
According to creative director Julian Gerighty, the open-world design of Ghost of Tsushima was a major inspiration for Star Wars Outlaws. Gerighty, who helms the development of this highly anticipated game, praised Sucker Punch Productions’ hit title for its innovative approach to open-world gameplay and its ability to fully immerse players in a captivating fantasy experience.
Speaking to GamesRadar at a recent preview event, Gerighty revealed that Ghost of Tsushima was his “biggest reference” when conceptualizing the open-world environment for Star Wars Outlaws. He emphasized his admiration for the way Ghost of Tsushima leans into player fantasy, creating a cohesive experience where the story, world, and characters seamlessly align with gameplay.
“I think that Ghost of Tsushima, what I loved about it was this purity of having a player fantasy and really leaning into it,” Gerighty explained. “This is the story, the world, the character, everything fits together with the gameplay guiding everything. That’s the fantasy of ‘you are a samurai ninja in Japan.’ That was one of the guiding lights for this.”
When Ghost of Tsushima was released, it drew numerous comparisons to Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series due to its action-adventure and stealth mechanics. This connection was further solidified by the game’s focus on exploration and combat, elements that are also integral to the Assassin’s Creed franchise.
Ironically, Ubisoft is now preparing to launch Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which has been compared to Ghost of Tsushima. This marks a full-circle moment in the evolution of open-world games, highlighting the influence and impact of Sucker Punch’s title on the genre.
