After Williams’ injury, veteran pass-rusher makes hints about the Cowboys signing
Veteran pass rusher Carl Lawson appears to be interested in signing with the Dallas Cowboys based on a mysterious message he posted on social media.
Following the injury to third-year defensive end Sam Williams during training camp, the Cowboys are in need of a pass-rusher. Lawson posted a star-shaped one-emoji tweet shortly after the announcement.
Formerly selected in the fourth round, Lawson has been a member of the Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets. In 31 starts, he has 27 career sacks and 28 tackles for loss.
With the Bengals as a rookie, Lawson had his greatest season with 8.5 sacks. More recently, he played in just six games last season despite having seven sacks with the Jets in 2022. He complained about how he didn’t have any snaps.
“I’ve always aimed to provide the team with my best self. However, because I’m a football player and not a cheerleader, that’s kind of where my head is at with that. At the end of the day, I do want to be a football player, I do want to produce, and I do want to help,” Lawson stated the previous season.
The Cowboys should give Lawson a call if they’re searching for an affordable, experienced fill-in. He would be able to assist Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence, and he is eager to contribute.
Cowboys Had Big Plans for Sam Williams
Williams was the 2022 second-round selection of the Cowboys. He was a major contributor and soon earned a berth in the rotation.
Over the past two seasons, Williams has accumulated 8.5 sacks and has participated in roughly one-third of the defensive snaps. That was anticipated to increase this year with the departures of Dante Fowler and Dorance Armstrong.
On Monday, July 29, Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer stated, “We had big plans for him.” “He was going to play a great deal—probably between seventy and seventy-five percent of the time.” All we can do is rearrange the chess pieces and look for alternative solutions. Williams was going to be outside with Parsons and (DeMarcus Lawrence) as we moved (Micah) Parsons around a little.
Cowboys Rookie Marshawn Kneeland Will Play ‘A Lot’
Marshawn Kneeland, a rookie, would have a heavier workload if the Cowboys choose not to sign a veteran. This year, Kneeland was chosen in the second round at position 56 overall. At Western Michigan, he recorded 148 tackles and 13 sacks in his collegiate career.
When the Cowboys made the decision to choose Lawrence, they saw a lot of Lawrence in Kneeland.
As hard as DLaw [DeMarcus Lawrence] played at Boise State, there are some parallels there, as we’ve discussed previously. After choosing Kneeland in April, Cowboys Vice President of Player Personnel Will McClay stated, “That is what we thought about him.”
The rookie has impressed everyone in camp thus far. Zimmer promised that he would play a part now that Williams was not involved.
Zimmer stated, “Marshawn Kneeland has done a really nice job.” “He would have played anyhow, but I believe he will now need to play a lot of games.”
On September 8, the Cowboys play the Cleveland Browns in the season’s first game.
