Wanderers sign €200k Striker to a New Deal

The Halifax Wanderers have signed Canadian striker Remi Agunbiade to a Development Contract for the 2024 CPL season.

Agunbiade, 18, joins the Wanderers from Vaughan Soccer Club. He scored 14 goals playing for Vaughan’s U19 team in 2023 and has also made several appearances for Vaughan’s senior and U21 teams.

“Remi is a young man with high potential that soaks in information; so he will continue to improve while being in our group,” Wanderers head coach Patrice Gheisar said. “He’s athletic with technical ability and going to a great school that has turned numerous attackers into MLS draft picks.”

The young forward is already committed to playing for a top NCAA program this fall. He will join the University of Akron ahead of their 2024 season. Akron has made multiple appearances in the National Championship final and won the tournament in 2010.

Agunbiade is the Wanderers’ first Development Player signing of 2024. League roster rules allow clubs to sign up to four Development Permits with Canadian U18 players (born January 1, 2006, or later). Development players can appear in up to six matches in a season.

In 2023, the Wanderers signed four players to Development Contracts: Kimani Stewart-Baynes, Ethan Schilte-Brown, Yorgos Gavas and Camilo Vasconcelos. This past week, Stewart-Baynes made his MLS debut for the Colorado Rapids after being selected 4th overall in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft. Schilte-Brown went on to sign with Scottish Premiership club Kilmarnock F.C., Vasconcelos signed a first-team contract with the Wanderers ahead of the 2024 season, while Yorgos Gavas remains eligible for a Development Contract in 2024.
