Obama Backs Harris to Win the Presidency
On July 26, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama announced their support for Vice President Kamala Harris’s quest for the presidency in 2024.
In an effort to gain momentum as the Democratic Party’s likely nominee following President Joe Biden’s announcement of his retirement from the race, Ms. Harris tweeted a video of herself accepting a joint phone call from the Obamas.
When Ms. Harris answered the phone backstage at an event, the former president said, “We called to say Michelle and I couldn’t be prouder to endorse you and do everything we can to get you through this election and into the Oval Office.”
Ms. Harris expressed her gratitude to the Obamas for their support and close relationship.
“Oh my god. I really appreciate this, Michelle and Barack. Doug and I are both looking forward to doing this together. and venturing outside and traveling,” the vice president remarked.
Above all, though, I just wanted to say how much I appreciate the things you have said and the companionship you have shown throughout the years; thank you both. It has immense meaning. And this will be enjoyable for us as well, don’t we?
The Obamas represent the final prominent members of the Democratic Party to align with the vice president in her aspiration to become the head of state.
Along with sharing the video on his X account, President Obama wrote in a caption that Ms. Harris had their “full support” and that the call occurred earlier this week.
He wrote, “We’re going to do everything we can to make sure she wins in November at this crucial moment for our country.”
Although hardly shocking, the endorsement comes after President Obama first stated at the party convention the following month that he supported an open Democratic primary process.
President Obama stated in a statement that omitted any mention of the vice president, “I have extraordinary confidence that the leaders of our party will be able to create a process from which an outstanding nominee emerges.”
“I think that at the Democratic Convention in August, Joe Biden’s vision of a giving, prosperous, and united America that offers opportunities to everyone will be on full display.”
Following President Biden’s declaration that he was concluding his campaign and endorsing the vice president, he released a statement.
Less than an hour had passed since former President Bill Clinton and former First Lady Hillary Clinton endorsed Ms. Harris in a joint statement, when President Obama first endorsed an open primary from which a Democratic presidential candidate would emerge.
The Clintons responded, “We will do everything in our power to support Vice President Harris and are honored to join the President in endorsing her.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) have all endorsed the vice president with promptness.
On July 21, President Biden declared his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential contest. On July 24, he gave a speech in the Oval Office outlining his reasons for doing so.
In the broadcast speech, President Biden stated, “It’s been the honor of my life to serve as your president, but in the defense of democracy, which is at stake, I think it’s more important than any title.”
Working for the American people gives me strength and joy, but this holy mission of improving our union is not about me. It concerns you, your loved ones, and your prospects. It concerns us, the people.
Thus, I’ve determined that passing the torch to a new generation is the wisest course of action.
The finest method to bring our country together is that. You know, extensive years of experience in the public eye have their place and time. Additionally, there is a place and a time for newer, more youthful voices. That location and time is right now.
In addition, the president outlined his priorities for the last six months of his presidency, emphasizing important objectives including increasing economic development, reducing inflation, enforcing gun control, and protecting the environment from what he called a “climate crisis.”
In addition, he stated that during his last days as president, he intends to advocate for changes to the Supreme Court.
Democrats adopted guidelines on July 24 that will be used to select their presidential nominee, indicating that they are proceeding swiftly in their nomination process for Ms. Harris.
