Before the Dallas Cowboys play the Cleveland Browns in Week 1, it is unknown if quarterback Dak Prescott will agree to a contract extension.

Throughout the entire offseason, there have been conflicting reports on Prescott’s condition. After the 2024 season, the current NFL MVP runner-up is expected to become a free agent. Things get a little more tricky because Dallas is unable to assign him the franchise tag.

The Cowboys were fine with Prescott finishing out his contract and testing free agency the following spring, as was previously mentioned.

In fact, after serving as the team’s face for the previous eight seasons, it was indicated in one rumor that he might decide to depart Dallas.

Thanks to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, we now know a little bit more about this (h/t Bleacher Report). Dallas would like to extend Prescott before he eventually enters free agency, even though contract negotiations have not progressed all that much this summer. Here, the market is another factor at work.

This wrinkle is a little bit here. Tua Tagovailoa is still in Miami and needs to close a deal. Jordan Love is still in Green Bay and has to close a deal, according to Fowler. “Dak Prescott has the greatest negotiating power among those three, so it’s possible that he’s waiting for those two to move first before sweeping the board with a massive deal that could reset the market.”

An extension of Dak Prescott’s contract would look like this

It has previously been mentioned several times that Prescott is probably looking at a new contract worth more than $60 million a year. He would then hold the record for the biggest NFL player salary ever.

Prescott is in complete control of this situation, as Fowler indicated. He flaunts his no-trade agreement. The elite quarterback cannot have the franchise tag applied to him by Dallas. To resolve this before March of next year, the team essentially has to concede to what Prescott and his group are requesting.

Here, the other problem is rather clear. Is Prescott the best choice available to the Cowboys? That is obviously untrue inside.

Regarding free agency and the trade block, Prescott’s contributions to the Cowboys are unmatched by any signal caller who is anticipated to be available.
