Tony Iommi of BLACK SABBATH Has Released “Deified,” His Second Signature Cologne.

Tony Iommi, the guitarist for BLACK SABBATH, has revealed plans to release a new distinctive scent in association with the upscale Italian perfume company Xerjoff.

Tony Iommi Deified, a new initiative from Xerjoff, is a mix of forces that play on the palindromic nature of sound, scent, and sensory sequences. Deified perfume will be available soon along with a music video and soundtrack.

Crafted with a contrast between leather and spice, Deified plays endlessly, enveloping the wearer in a pervasive aura. Warm, genuine saffron notes blend with powdery, leathery undertones that dance with a subtle hint of delectable freshness. Warmer tones are enhanced with cinnamon, while a soft rose undertone unites the flavors. Papyrus and patchouli’s woody foundation left the senses wanting more in a rhythmic back-and-forth exchange.

Enter a parallel reality where mystery rules the imagination in this sinister and opulent encounter that leaves the wearer with subtle shadows.

On Friday, July 26 at 4 p.m. BST, the official “Deified” soundtrack and music video will be available.

In 2021, Iommi’s first iconic cologne was released. At the time, it was said to be the result of a friendship that developed between Iommi and renowned perfumer and Xerjoff designer Sergio Momo—who is well-known in the fragrance industry for his distinctive and individual creations and partnerships. The bond was formed during the epidemic. In addition, Sergio is a skilled guitarist. Iommi recorded the song “Scent Of Dark” to promote his debut fragrance, and you can hear his excellent fretwork on it.

Although Iommi’s reputation for uncompromising heavy music and the world of upscale scents may not seem like complementary things, the guitarist’s interest in fragrances actually dates back to the early years of BLACK SABBATH.

“It’s something I’ve always been interested in, ever since the early days of products like Brut and Old Spice, which I’d always get given for Christmas,” Tony said. “But as soon as I started traveling the world with Sabbath, I started finding all kinds of fragrances from other nations, and I started bringing them with me wherever I went.

“I met Sergio through another friend of mine Jimmy Crutchley (who plays bass on ‘Scent Of Dark’) and Sergio kindly sent me a box of his fragrances and asked if I’d be interested in creating my own, which I certainly wasn’t expecting,” Iommi chuckled. “I didn’t know how that would function, but Sergio advised me to make a list of things that I enjoy the scent of, so I did. The project proceeded from there when I selected my favorite among the several prototypes he created based on my suggestions.”

Tony introduced amber and patchouli, together with the nostalgic scents of rock from the 1960s and 1970s, festivals, and get-togethers, to his debut fragrance. The finished product perfectly captured the sensuous and spicy aromas together with the deep tone of Iommi’s original, well-known ’64 Monkey Special guitar.

Tony has contributed significantly to the development of his scent from the beginning. “I wouldn’t put my name to something that I haven’t been involved in and didn’t personally like or use,” he said. “That’s been the same with all of the projects I’ve done from guitars onwards, this is no different.”

Regarding his interest in cologne, Iommi said in a November 2021 Rolling Stone interview: “It’s like, ever since [BLACK SABBATH] went on tour to the States, I started getting more and more into it.” I used to visit shopping centers or malls and purchase many perfumes and scents until I discovered one that truly appealed to me. I would then settle on one for a period. Then I would switch, go from Cartier to Ford, or something. I’ve spent years doing it. I now have a plethora of my own customized ones.”

Tony responded, “Oh, God,” when asked which scents he preferred when he first started working with Sergio. Given how awful a few of the samples were, I believe that some of them threw him off. Others, nevertheless, excelled. I enjoy certain scents, such as the fragrance of freshly parked cars, leather, and obviously coffee. This vintage perfume mostly contains patchouli, which dates back to the 1960s. I was aware of the scent of patchouli back then; individuals would use it to cover up the smell of marijuana usage.
