The Kansas City Chiefs continue to strengthen Patrick Mahomes‘ passing options by hiring a free agent wide receiver in a bid to ensure they avoid the offense issues that plagued their Super Bowl winning team in 2023.
The news emerged on Wednesday, July 17 that the Chiefs were making six roster moves in the wake of injuries as Joe Thuney, Derrick Nnadi, Charles Omenihu, and Jaylen Watson all headed to the Physically Unable to Perform List, whilst B. J. Thompson also went onto the Non-Football Injury list too.
In the wake of that, head coach Andy Reid decided to pick up Kyle Sheets who practiced with the team on Wednesday, including with Mahomes, after going undrafted through the 2024 NFL Draft. He then agreed a deal with the New Orleans Saints before they waived him on July 14 before heading to the Chiefs.
At 6ft4in and 220lbs, he is expected to wear the number 26 jersey and will join a list of receivers in Mahomes‘ arsenal including Xavier Worthy, Travis Kelce, Marquise Brown, Rashee Rice and Mecole Hardman.
Who is Kyle Sheets?
The Chiefs decided to offer Sheets a contract on the back of a solid NCAA college football career which saw him make 76 catches for Slippery Rock whilst ranking third in Division II with 17 receiving touchdowns.
At the age of 23, he also finished his career as a two-time Division II All-American and made 154 catches, 2240 receiving yards and 29 touchdowns through his Slippery Rock career, ranking in their Top 10 players.
Prior to the NFL Draft, Sheets also appeared at the Temple’s Pro Day where he scored a 38-inch vertical jump and 4.52 time in the 40-yard dash.
For now, Sheet’s focus will be on making the practice squad cut in Kansas City where is thought to be battling it out with Montrell Washington and Phillip Brooks to name two.
